How each AI engine picks its sources

6 engines, 6 rulebooks. The overlap between ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Overviews is tiny, so per-platform strategy beats any blended score.

Answer first

The engines barely overlap — ~11% of domains are cited by both ChatGPT and Perplexity, and AI Overviews vs AI Mode share only ~14% of URLs. ChatGPT leans Wikipedia and recency; Perplexity leans Reddit and Bing/IndexNow; AI Overviews cite already-ranking pages (~94% top-10) while AI Mode pulls ~88% of citations from outside the top 10. Optimize each surface on its own terms.

The engines barely agree

Only about 11% of domains are cited by both ChatGPT and Perplexity; Google's own AI Overviews and AI Mode share URLs just ~14% of the time; and brand-citation rates span a 46× spread across engines in one 34,000-response 2026 study (ChatGPT ~0.6%, Perplexity ~13%, Grok ~27%). A single blended AI-visibility score hides all of this — measure and optimize per platform.

One honest caveat: engines miscite

Columbia's Tow Center found ChatGPT Search confidently wrong in 146 of 200 tested citations, with follow-up work measuring error rates around 60% and Grok worst of all. An MIT Sloan experiment (~12,000 queries, seven countries) adds the uncomfortable half: citations raise user trust even when they are wrong. So monitor not just whether you are cited but how — a confident misquote about your brand is a real risk your prompt set should catch.

Questions people actually ask

Why am I cited in Perplexity but not ChatGPT?

Different indexes and source preferences: Perplexity leans on Bing plus community sources and cites about 3× more sources per answer. Roughly 11% overlap between the two is normal, not a bug — optimize each separately.

Is AI Mode the same as AI Overviews?

No. AI Overviews cite pages that already rank (~94% from the top 10), while a 40,000-keyword Moz study found ~88% of AI Mode citations come from outside the top 10. Treat them as different surfaces with different levers.

Do AI engines cite accurately?

Often not: journalism-school testing found high confident-error rates, and research shows citations raise trust even when wrong. Check how you are represented in answers, not just whether you appear.

What about Gemini and Grok?

Gemini grounds its answers in Google Search and the Knowledge Graph, so entity work — Business Profile, Wikidata, consistent schema — is the lever. Grok names brands most freely (~27% brand-citation rate in one 34,000-response study) but performed worst on citation accuracy in testing, so treat it first as a reputation-monitoring surface.
