GEO vs SEO vs AEO: what's the difference?

GEO, SEO, AEO — three layers of the same search, not three competitors. Here's the difference and how they stack.

Answer first

SEO earns a ranked link, AEO makes your page the single extracted answer, and GEO gets you cited inside a generated answer. They're complementary layers: strong classic SEO is the foundation AI visibility builds on, so you run all three together rather than choosing.

How SEO, AEO and GEO differ

They target different moments of the same search. SEO earns a ranked link you click; AEO makes your page the single extracted answer; GEO gets you cited inside a multi-source generated answer. They're layers, not rivals — and the brands winning AI citations are overwhelmingly the ones with strong classic SEO underneath.

Do you need all three?

Yes, and mostly you do them at once — the work overlaps. A crawlable, fast, authoritative page with a front-loaded answer and real information gain serves all three simultaneously. Google's own guidance says optimizing for its AI features is just SEO, so treat GEO and AEO as extensions that add fact density, citation-friendly structure, and off-site consensus — not a separate program.

The one-line version

SEO gets you eligible, AEO makes you extractable, GEO gets you cited. Skip the foundation and the other two have nothing to stand on.

Where the work actually differs

The overlap is real — Google's own guide says so — but the day-to-day work shifts in five places:

Off-page currencyBacklinks (r≈0.22 with AI visibility)Brand mentions (r≈0.66) and cross-source consensus

Where to invest, by site type

Site typeHighest-leverage move
Local service businessGoogle Business Profile, reviews, consistent NAP — classic local IS the AI play
E-commerceProduct/Offer schema and clean feeds; read the agentic commerce guide
B2B / SaaSComparison and docs pages plus earned mentions — the category where AI referrals convert best
PublisherDecide your crawler-licensing stance first, then answer-shape the archive

Whatever the type, you never choose between SEO and GEO — most of the work is shared. The genuinely new increment is measurement, answer-shaping, and mention-building, and it is cheap enough to add rather than switch.

Questions people actually ask

Does GEO replace SEO?

No. GEO stacks on top of SEO. The pages that win AI citations are overwhelmingly the ones with strong classic SEO foundations — Google itself says optimizing for its AI features is just SEO.

What's the difference between GEO and AEO?

GEO is the broad goal of being cited across generative engines; AEO is the on-page craft of being the single extracted answer. AEO is essentially the on-page half of GEO.

Is 'AI SEO' different from traditional SEO?

It's traditional SEO plus new requirements: fact density, self-contained answers, entity clarity, and off-site consensus across the surfaces AI reads. The fundamentals carry over; the emphasis shifts.

Is GEO worth it for a small site?

Yes, in proportion: most GEO work is SEO you should be doing anyway, and the genuinely new parts — a fixed measurement prompt set, answer-shaped passages, honest mention-building — are cheap enough to do yourself with the workflow on this site. Be wary of packages sold as GEO that are mostly llms.txt files and schema; the 2026 evidence says neither is a citation lever.
