SourceCited / Phase 3 · Off-page consensus
3 Phase 3
AI search is a consensus engine that prefers earned media, so the biggest GEO gains are off your own site: get the same true story onto Reddit, listicles, reviews, and YouTube.
Because ~82% of AI citations trace to earned media, the highest-leverage work is off-site. Start with one entity fact sheet used identically everywhere, then earn genuine presence on the surfaces AI reads — Reddit, listicles, reviews, YouTube, unlinked PR mentions. Contribute honestly; manufactured consensus is increasingly detected and cuts both ways.
Most AI citations trace to earned media, not your own domain — so the highest-leverage GEO work happens off your site. The model wants to see the same true facts about you agreed on by independent sources. Your job is to make that agreement exist, honestly, on the surfaces AI reads. The correlations are strong: across 75,000 brands, Ahrefs found web mentions correlate roughly 3× more with AI visibility than backlinks (r≈0.66 vs ≈0.22), with YouTube mentions among the strongest single predictors (~0.74) — and top-quartile-mention brands earned about 10× the citations. Reddit is the single most-cited domain across engines; wire press releases, by contrast, earn next to nothing.
| Surface | What earns a citation |
|---|---|
| Reddit & niche forums | Genuine, specific answers in threads where buyers actually ask. No shilling — engines index sentiment, and an astroturf blow-up becomes permanent, citable negative consensus. |
| "Best X" listicles | Legitimate inclusion in third-party roundups for your category. |
| Review platforms | Real reviews earned over time; fabricated ones violate platform and consumer-protection rules and get filtered. |
| YouTube | Demos, tutorials, category explainers — now one of the highest-correlation off-page signals and a top citation source inside AI Overviews. |
| Digital PR / mentions | Unlinked brand mentions across trusted sites — these out-predict backlinks for AI visibility. |
Consistency is the signal. Write one canonical set of facts about your brand — name, one-line description, categories, key differentiators, founding facts — and use the identical wording everywhere. Inconsistent facts across surfaces make the model less confident, not more.
Draft an entity fact sheet I can reuse verbatim across my site, listings, and profiles. From the details I'm pasting, produce: - Canonical brand name and a one-sentence description (used identically everywhere). - 3–5 category tags and 3 concrete differentiators, each phrased as a checkable fact. - A 40-word and a 100-word "about" version. - The exact same facts formatted for: an Organization schema block, an llms.txt summary, and a directory listing. Keep every version factually identical — only length changes.
For my product/topic (described below), help me build off-page presence the legitimate way: 1. List the specific subreddits, forums, and Q&A sites where my actual buyers ask questions. 2. For 5 real question types they ask, draft a genuinely useful answer that helps first and only mentions my site where it's truly the best fit — no marketing voice, no over-linking. 3. Draft a short, honest outreach note to be considered for relevant "Best X" listicles. Flag anything that would read as shilling so I can cut it.
The grey-hat-but-defensible move is real contributions where AI looks. Manufacturing fake consensus is increasingly filtered — and when it's caught, the negative thread gets cited too.
Sockpuppets, fake reviews, seeded identical claims across throwaway sites. Retrieval stacks are hardened against exactly this; many "AI answer hijacking" demos only worked by bypassing the reranker real systems run. It violates platform and consumer-protection rules, and the legitimate version — earning genuine mentions — produces the same signal without collapsing at the next update.
Shilling is — and it backfires, because engines index sentiment and a caught astroturf campaign becomes permanent negative consensus. Genuinely helpful contributions where your buyers already ask are legitimate and are what compounds.
For AI visibility, yes — 2026 analyses find unlinked mentions out-predict backlinks for citations, because the consensus engine reads the mention itself, not just the link graph.
One entity fact sheet, then YouTube plus the two or three communities where your buyers actually ask questions. Depth on a few surfaces beats a thin presence everywhere.
